Oscar Ornelas plays a seamless fusion of blues and jazz, nurtured by East Austin's rich musical legacy. In 2014, Oscar Ornelas made Austin his new home and immediately ignited the local music scene. During his very first weekend in town, he secured gigs and took the stage every night. Collaborating with East Austin icons such as Harold McMillan and Matthew Robinson, he found himself on a unique musical path, one that opened doors and offered opportunities that eluded many newcomers.
Ornelas fondly recalls his early experiences, stating, "I'm profoundly grateful for the vibrant music scene in East Austin." In the heart of this dynamic community, blues and jazz artists warmly embraced him, setting the stage for his remarkable journey. Since his arrival, Ornelas has carved out a niche as a respected musician firmly rooted in East Austin, frequently gracing The Skylark Lounge stage multiple times each month.
His musical journey began at a young age, but it was at eighteen that he fell headlong in love with the blues. With a focus on piano and saxophone, Ornelas has been immersed in the world of blues ever since.
Drawing inspiration from legendary figures like Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima, Ornelas is currently in the creative throes of crafting new music. His compositions are a reflection of the blues and jazz traditions of New Orleans, mirroring their deep-rooted elements. While his earlier works centered on the pursuit of a compelling rhythm, he now seeks to infuse more profound messages into his lyrics, aiming to resonate with his audience on a deeper level.
